This event began and continues to be a tribute and in memory of Tony Thompson. A longtime resident of Grand Haven, Tony took part in his first ever triathlon many years ago. Like most others, he was hooked with the desire to do more.
In a very short time, Tony excelled at triathlons to the level of consistently placing in the top 2 of the “Clydesdale” division. This included sprint, olympic, 1/2 Ironman and full Ironman distances. There were also times if a race did not have a “Clydesdale” division, he would still place in the top 5 of his age group. It always seemed the more challenging the event, the more he enjoyed it. In 2001, Tony placed 2nd in the “Clydesdale” division at Ironman, Florida with a fast time of 11 hours, 19 minutes. If you were fortunate enough to see Tony at a race, you would sense he was like a kid in the candy store.
Tony was extremely particular with his eating and lifestyle habits. He trained with a focus unmatched by others. He would not, however, put his training above spending time with his 2 sons, Kyle and Ian. He was a loving and devoted father to his sons. Tony was always a positive influence to whomever crossed his path, be it encouraging someone in training or at a race. His humble attitude certainly displayed his faith. He would do anything he could to help those in need or encourage someone in life.
On May 1, 2004, Tony was suddenly taken from us to be with his Lord as a result of an undetected heart condition. As a result of his healthy lifestyle, Tony was able to live many years compared to others that were diagnosed with the same condition. This simply shows that regardless how active and healthy we “THINK” we are, we need to continually get thorough checkups with medical professionals.
As a result, of Tony’s unending encouragement, focused family lifestyle, faith and commitment, we dedicate this event in tribute to Tony Thompson.
